The Walter Munk Foundation for the Oceans offers field trips that are both engaging and educational. Our field trips inspire students and participants through immersive, educational adventures beyond the traditional classroom.
The Sea Unites Us Fieldtrip
A Collaboration with Maily Mozart, Promotora de las Bellas Artes, and Kilometro Uno.
BATHYMETRY ACTIVITY: Students learn about the relationship between land activities and ocean health. Topography and bathymetry influence the flow of pollutants (represented by rubber duckies) from land to the ocean. This activity emphasizes the impact of human actions on marine ecosystems.
CONSERVATION & RECYCLING: This game teaches students about decision-making and recycling through a fun activity. Players aim to toss bean bags into the "ocean" and correctly sort their rubber circles into same color recycling bins, emphasizing accuracy and environmental awareness.
TIDE POOLS: How many species can you find at the Marine Room Tide Pools? With our custom Bingo card, you can spot both land animals and marine animals, such as the Spiny Lobster, Knobby Sea Star, Shore Crab, and the Brown Pelican.
SEAWEED PRESSING for ART: Students will explore three types of seaweed (brown, green, and red), their role in ecosystems, and their importance as a natural resource. They will also create seaweed pressings as environmental art to take home.
MOUNT. SOLEDAD NATIONAL VETERANS MEMORIAL: Students explore the heights of Mount Soledad with environmental science lessons. They engage in activities like art projects, scavenger hunts, and a picnic, while developing critical thinking and a deeper connection to the ocean and its ecosystems.
BRONZE RUBBING for ART: Students will explore texture and art while learning about the significance of the animal they are rubbing with a crayon, to capture the design. Students can explore the textures in nature and connect to the environment around them.
SAND ANALYSIS: Students use their observation skills to examine and analyze sand particles through a microscope to explore its properties, origins, and environmental significance.
